Thailand’s military has shut down hundreds of community radio stations in rural provinces where deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had widespread support, the junta said Sunday. “This is to avoid unrest and cause no misunderstanding of the situation,” junta spokesman Col. Acar Tiproj said, adding that the radio stations had been closed since Friday, three days after the kingdom’s bloodless coup. “We want to prevent any reports that can cause disunity for the country,” he said.
