The Baghdad morgue recorded more than 1,500 violent deaths in August, a morgue official said Thursday, a notable reduction from July’s toll but hardly the sharp drop that American military and Iraqi government officials had been predicting. The morgue official said 1,535 bodies were received in August, about the same number as in June and a 17 percent reduction from July.
