The lord mayor of Dublin, Vincent Jackson, evacuated his official residence overnight, and army specialists, detectives and sniffer dogs were called to the building to search for a bomb that a Protestant paramilitary group said it planted 25 years ago. The police later gave the all-clear, saying in a statement, “Nothing of a suspicious nature was found.” The alert followed a claim made in an interview with leaders of the Ulster Volunteer Force in The Belfast Telegraph, Northern Ireland’s leading daily newspaper.
