Algeria could extend amnesty

Algeria, emerging from years of conflict, could extend a six-month reconciliation programme including an amnesty for Islamist rebels when it expires next week, the prime minister said on Wednesday. The comments by Abdul Aziz Belkhadem are the most prominent of several recent official hints that the government of Africa’s second largest country may extend the programme and its key amnesty provisions after its expected August 28 expiry.
