A ship carrying food approached Sri Lanka’s Jaffna peninsula for the first time in nearly two weeks on Thursday, but a new government demand made an end to fighting with the Tamil Tiger rebels seem more distant. The worst conflict since a 2002 ceasefire has left the road through rebel territory to Jaffna shut and the airbase closed to civilian flights, while the sea routes have been attacked by the rebels in boats.
