Israeli air strike provokes shock, fury
An Israeli air strike that killed 52 Lebanese civilians, mostly sleeping children, spread shock and fury from the United Nations to the streets of Damascus and Baghdad. The attack on Qana in southern Lebanon also piled pressure on the United States and Britain to stop the fighting despite stiff Israeli opposition to an immediate ceasfire. Israel declared a 48-hour pause in its onslaught Monday but even so an Israeli army spokesman said warplanes struck uninhabited zones near the Lebanese border village of Taibe Monday in support of ground forces.
