Six people were killed when Islamic militants staged a daring ambush on a police checkpoint in southern Thailand, police have said. Ten militants opened fire Thursday afternoon on the roadside checkpoint in Pattani province, one of three Muslim-majority provinces where separatist and other unrest has left more than 1,300 people dead since January 2004.
