Israel has shown no sign of reining in its relentless bombardment of Lebanon, killing 18 people in an air strike on a convoy of fleeing families and destroying the Beirut headquarters of the Hezbollah leader. With missiles also slamming into no-man’s land between Lebanon and Syria, Russia warned that there was a “real threat” of the conflict escalating into all-out regional war. “There is a real threat of the involvement of other states in this conflict,” Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said ahead of a G8 summit of world leaders in Saint Petersburg likely to be dominated by crisis.
