Turkey’s plans to beef up its fight against terrorism threaten to roll back progress made by the European Union candidate country in combating torture and other abuses, a leading human rights group said on Tuesday. New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) also urged Turkey’s center-right government to stand up for freedom of expression and scrap an article in its penal code that has led to the trial of scores of writers, academics and journalists.
