India offered to consider releasing five top jailed separatist leaders if rebels end decades of violence in the northeast state of Assam. “The home minister stated that the request for releasing five ULFA detainees from jail would be considered in consultation with the Assam government,” a joint statement by government peace negotiators and rebel representatives said on Thursday.
