Prime Minister John Howard is to commit Australian troops in Iraq to a new and more risky role when the Japanese military engineers they are guarding are withdrawn. “This is not the time to leave the Iraqi people to their own devices, in other words to cut and run,” Howard told parliament, announcing that some 450 troops would be redeployed to support Iraqi security forces. “Australia will not be hostage to a particular timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.
