Defence Minister Des Browne said Britain wants a security clampdown in the southern Iraqi city of Basra along the lines of a similar operation in Baghdad, as thousands of troops encircled the rebel bastion of Ramadi. “I am here to discuss an equivalent plan for security in Basra,” Browne, on a previously unannounced visit to Baghdad, told a joint news conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Monday.
