Rebels said ready to disarm in East Timor

The commander of the Australian peacekeepers in East Timor said Thursday that the rebel soldiers who are camped out in the hills surrounding the capital are ready to begin handing over their weapons as a first step to resolving months of unrest. “We are in the process now of making arrangements for them to hand in their weapons, and there is every indication that they’re going to comply,” Brig.
