U.N. special envoy Ian Martin on Tuesday called for U.N. peacekeepers to return to East Timor to help stabilize the country a year after U.N. forces were withdrawn. Martin told the U.N. Security Council international assistance should extend from policing to long-term development of a national police force. “I don’t believe this crisis is about Timor Leste being a failed state,” Martin told reporters, calling the country by the name used at the United Nations. “It’s about a state that is only four years old and struggling to stand on its two feet and learn to practice democratic governance.” Full Story
