East Timor’s prime minister was standing firm after a mass protest calling on him to quit, as the first unrest was reported outside the capital since the arrival of foreign troops two weeks ago. More than 1,000 protesters converged on Dili Tuesday to demand that Mari Alkatiri step down. Many in East Timor blame him for the unrest that has followed his sacking of 600 soldiers after they complained of discrimination because they came from the country’s west. Full Story
