A shootout between police and drug gangs left 17 children injured Wednesday — several hit by stray bullets even though their teacher ordered them to lie down on the floor when the shooting began, authorities said. Police said they stopped a motorcycle driver to search when drug gangs opened fire near the school in a Rio shantytown. Police said they did not return fire and the victims were wounded by the gangs.
