Australian Prime Minister John Howard hailed the announcement that Al-Qaeda’s leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had been killed as “great news” for the Iraqi people and a blow to terrorism. Howard, who has defied Australian public opinion by deploying Australian troops in Iraq, said Zarqawi’s killing, reportedly in a US airstrike, was also a boost for “anti-terrorist” forces in the country.
