Australia is preparing to nearly double the number of police deployed in neighboring East Timor in a bid to restore law and order to the troubled nation, officials said. But Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Australia would be seeking changes in East Timor’s legal framework to ensure the police had the necessary powers to investigate those behind the violence. Downer said 106 federal police officers were currently in the East Timor capital Dili to help some 2,000 Australian and other international troops cope with the rioting and gang warfare that has gripped the tiny country.
