The United Nations hinted that it may increase its presence in East Timor where terrified inhabitants of the tiny country are praying for something to be done to end weeks of violent unrest. “I think just about everybody I’ve talked to believes that there will now be a larger role for the UN,” said envoy Ian Martin, who was sent to East Timor by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to assess the situation.
