Suspicions that a Colombian military unit assassinated an elite anti-narcotics team at the bidding of the drug mafia two weeks ago have proven true, officials say, in a case that has badly shaken public confidence in the military. On May 22, 10 of the country’s most successful anti-drug police were killed by a military platoon near Cali. Two military officers and six soldiers were arrested last week on the basis of evidence that investigators say prove the eight men planned the killings. “This was not a mistake, this was a crime,” Attorney General Mario Iguaran said.
