AU says Darfur peace won’t be held hostage by rebel holdouts

The African Union insisted that Darfur rebels could not hold hostage an AU-brokered peace deal for the war-torn Sudanese region, the day after a rebel faction called for the UN to take over mediation efforts. “We cannot hold the Darfur Peace Agreement hostage to those who did not sign, we have to go ahead and start implementation because the situation in Darfur can’t wait,” AU spokesman in Khartoum Noureddine Mezni told AFP.
