Islamist gunmen have launched a surprise attack on a US-backed warlord alliance in the lawless Somali capital, re-igniting fierce battles for the city and shattering a tense 72-hour lull. At least seven people were killed as the two sides exchanged machine gun, rocket and artillery fire on Wednesday in Mogadishu’s northeast Sukahola neighborhood after what witnesses said was a mortar attack on an alliance position followed by a ground assault by about 150 Islamists.
