With its thin barrier of barbed wire, dusty courtyard and mudbrick barracks, this Canadian military post in southern Afghanistan is hardly imposing. Nonetheless it represents the authority of the Afghan government in Kandahar province’s Shah Wali Kot district, one of the most dangerous in Afghanistan. “Historically this has been a problematic area, the Gumbad valley, with a lot of Taliban activity and generally a lack of government presence,” says area commander Kirk Gallinger, sitting on the ground under the blazing sun.
