Members of the international Middle East Quartet will meet in New York on Monday to discuss a deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories, with the US and its European partners yet to agree on how to avert a humanitarian crisis while denying funds to Hamas. The US and the European Union cut direct funding of the Palestinian Authority after a government led by Hamas – which both regard as a terrorist organisation – took office in March. Russia, also a member of the Quartet along with the United Nations, went against the consensus by agreeing to meet Hamas leaders and offering emergency aid to the PA. Full Story
