Bush Speaks of Closing Guantánamo Prison

President Bush said yesterday that he would like to close the United States-run prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, a step that has been urged by several foreign leaders. But he said he was awaiting a Supreme Court ruling on where the terrorism suspects held there might be tried. Mr. Bush, who met last week in Washington with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, was asked by the German public television station ARD how the United States could restore its image as a nation that respected human rights after reports of abuse and the indefinite detentions of prisoners at Guantánamo.
