The Department of Health and Human Services awarded a total of $1 billion in research contracts to drugmakers on Thursday as part of the government’s effort to encourage development of quicker and more efficient modes of vaccine production in case of an avian flu pandemic. According to the agency, the funds are targeted at encouraging cell-based vaccine culturing technologies. Currently, flu vaccines are created from cells cultured in chicken eggs, a process ranges from six to nine months, a painfully long time to wait in the face of an international pandemic. Full Story
