Israel’s military chief said in comments published Tuesday that he opposes reoccupying the Gaza Strip in an effort to stop Palestinian militants from firing Qassam rockets. Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz also warned Hamas, which rules the Palestinian government, that Israel will not “hold back” in acting against the Islamic militant group if it continues to support terror attacks against Israel. “I am not pushing for the occupation of Gaza,” Halutz told the Haaretz daily in an interview that appeared on Israel’s Memorial Day. “I am pushing in the opposite direction. … I can’t recall that in all the years of fighting when we were there that we succeeded in reducing the firing of Qassams to zero.” Full Story
