Mediators extended a deadline for a peace agreement in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur province by 48 hours after rebels rejected a deal to end a conflict that has killed 300,000 people. “We shall stop the clock for the next 48 hours to allow more consultations by the parties,” the African Union’s mediator Salim Ahmed Salim said just after a midnight deadline passed without the hoped-for agreement on the AU-brokered peace deal between Darfur rebels and the Khartoum government.
