Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said in a British newspaper interview that he was not fighting terrorists in his country purely on behalf of the United States. Covert American air strikes against Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network in Pakistan were an infringement of national sovereignty, the general told the Guardian newspaper in Rawalpindi. He added that while Al-Qaeda is on the run in Pakistan, the Taliban — ousted from power in neighbouring Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks in the United States in 2001 — was growing in popularity.
