Syria threatened Lebanese parliamentarians and gave them “direct instructions” to ensure President Emile Lahoud a third term in office, according to a report by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Lahoud, a staunch ally of Syria, has clung to power despite calls for his resignation. Annan’s report, circulated late on Tuesday, gives further details on the pressure Damascus allegedly put on Lebanese legislators two years ago.
