About 1,000 people have left their homes in the port town of Trincomalee in north-eastern Sri Lanka after a surge in violence in the area. More than 30 people have been killed in Trincomalee in recent attacks blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels – a charge they have denied. Police have enforced a curfew and some NGOs are pulling out of the area. The rebels have suspended participation in peace talks scheduled to be held in Switzerland next week. Full Story
