Nepalese Forces Fire on Demonstrators

Security forces in a southern town shot into a crowd marching on the main highway to protest Nepal’s royal dictatorship Monday, killing one and wounding five, a local administrator said. Protesters also clashed with police in Katmandu, the capital of this Himalayan nation that has been besieged by two weeks of demonstrations and a general strike to press demands for the return of democracy. Several people were injured by rubber bullets and tear gas. The government, meanwhile, offered armed escorts for trucks in hopes of reversing a sharp drop in commercial traffic that has left Katmandu short of fresh food and fuel. Full Story
