Clashes in Egypt as Copts blame church attacks on ‘terrorist’ plot

Clashes have erupted in the Egyptian port of Alexandria after the funeral service of a worshipper killed in attacks on Coptic Christian churches that the clergy blamed on a “terrorist” plot. Muslims and Copts attacked each other with sticks in the northern city’s downtown area and stones were thrown from nearby buildings, as mourners marched to the cemetery to bury the body of 78-year-old Noshi Atta Girgis. Police intervened and separated the two groups, but confrontations between them and the Muslims continued, with security forces firing teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd Saturday.
