European Union foreign ministers voiced support Monday for a freeze on EU aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian government but stressed they would seek alternative ways of providing money for humanitarian projects. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the EU’s external relations commissioner, said Europe continues to “stand by the Palestinian people” and would provide money for electricity, food and education so “their basic human needs will be met in the future.” However, she insisted that Hamas renounce violence, recognize the existence of Israel and stand by agreements Israel has signed previously with the Palestinians.
