The Spanish parliament approved a bill granting the northeastern region of Catalonia extended autonomy from Madrid, despite opposition from the right-wing and Catalan separatist parties. Conservative Popular Party (PP) leader Mariano Rajoy warned that the vote marked “the beginning of the end” of the Spanish state. The separatist ERC party also voted against the bill, saying it did not go far enough. The separatists complained in particular it did not describe Catalonia as a “nation,” except in the preamble, which does not have the force of law. Full Story
