Ministers have won the latest battle over ID cards – overturning an earlier defeat in the House of Lords. Peers have so far rejected on five occasions plans to force all passport applicants to get an ID card, claiming the scheme was not “voluntary”. But MPs overturned that proposal by 305 votes to 251, a majority of 54, meaning the bill will now return to the Lords. The MPs and peers may face an all night sitting if deadlock continues over the “compulsory” aspect of the bill. Full Story
