ASIA: The US ambassador to Japan toured the site in central Japan where North Korean agents abducted a schoolgirl in 1977, and condemned the “deep wrong” carried out by the communist state. Amid an international standoff with Pyongyang, Thomas Schieffer became the first US envoy to visit the intersection in coastal Niigata prefecture where Megumi Yokota, then 13, was snatched as she walked home from school. Schieffer said he would report on his visit to US President George W. Bush. “I just want to convey to him that sense of the deep wrong that has been done here,” Schieffer told reporters. Full Story
