The head of UN peacekeeping operations says security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is stable enough to allow elections in June. Jean-Marie Guehenno said while there were numerous armed groups still operating in the area, progress was being made to disarm them. Mr Guehenno has been travelling around the country for more than a week. He has been assessing the progress of the 17,000 UN peacekeepers – the largest UN force in the world. Their strategy has been one of military operations combined with attempts to convince militia groups and renegade soldiers from the army to put down their weapons.Full Story
