FARC rebels heighten preelection violence

Leftist rebels intensified attacks in rural areas of Colombia ahead of weekend parliamentary elections but announced plans to free two police officers, a gesture President Alvaro Uribe said amounted to human trafficking. Attackers dynamited an oil pipeline and downed electrical towers, authorities said, and a bomb killed three people in the southern town of San Vicente del Caguan, the site of failed 1999-2002 peace negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.
