Nigerian militants holding nine foreign oil workers said they would release one U.S. hostage on his birthday on Wednesday. Asked whether Macon Hawkins, a Texan who turned 69 on Wednesday and suffers from diabetes, would be freed, the militants replied in an email to Reuters: “He will be released today.” The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has been holding nine men — three Americans including Hawkins, one Briton, two Egyptians, two Thais and a Filipino — since February 18 when they were snatched from a barge operated by U.S. oil services company Willbros.
