Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari claimed that sectarian violence in his country would not derail efforts to set up a new government and said the security situation was now under control. Jaafari’s comments, during a one-day visit to Turkey, came as bomb attacks in three Baghdad Shiite neighbourhoods killed at least 30 people and wounded 130, in the latest bloodshed in a week of sustained violence. Sectarian unrest broke out when a revered Shiite shrine in Iraq’s northern town of Samarra was bombed last Wednesday, provoking attacks against the minority Sunni community in a spiral of violence that has since claimed nearly 400 lives.
