Documentary evidence presented last week in the Saddam Hussein trial has bolstered the prosecution’s contention that the ex-president was personally involved in the crackdown on Shiites. But no “smoking gun” has appeared. Saddam and seven co-defendants have been on trial since Oct. 19 for the killing of nearly 150 villagers from Dujail after a 1982 assassination attempt against Saddam there.
