Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, on a snap visit to Baghdad, defended British troops in Iraq, saying there were attempting “to clean up some politics” in the south of the country. Straw arrived in the Iraq capital on Monday, eight days after disturbing images of soldiers in British combat uniforms abusing Iraqi civilians were published in a London newspaper. He was to hold talks Tuesday with Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari and President Jalal Talabani to discuss the way forward for Iraq’s fledgling government after December’s general elections. Full Story
