The top U.S. envoy for public diplomacy on Monday defended the conditions at the prison at Guantanamo Bay and said the detainees were not criminals, but warriors. In an interview with the Arabic-language Al-Jazeera satellite channel, Undersecretary of State Karen Hughes said the about 490 prisoners held in Guantanamo were arrested for waging a war against the United States or for helping al-Qaida or the Taliban in their wars.
