US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld clashed with Democratic lawmakers who accused the administration of incompetence in Iraq and called for a timetable for a US withdrawal. Rumsfeld, accompanied by two top military officers, defended the progress made in Iraq but acknowledged in a congressional hearing, “There’s no road map how to do this.” He pointed to the success of Iraq’s national elections in December and other indicators of progress but admitted that the tug and pull of politics has delayed the formation of a new government.
