U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, wrapping up three days of talks in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, said on Monday he saw an “extremely low possibility” of al Qaeda or similar guerrilla groups gaining a foothold in the three North African countries. “I think each of these three countries certainly stands out as examples of countries where they’ve taken a lot of steps to show that they can live in peace and successfully deal with the problem of extremism,” Rumsfeld told reporters after meeting with King Mohammed at a royal mountain retreat in the Atlas mountains.
