Yemen puts senior al Qaeda suspect on trial

A Yemeni court on Monday began the trial of a senior al Qaeda suspect charged with funding militants in the Arab state, which has been embarrassed by a recent al Qaeda jail break. Mohammad Hamdi al-Ahdal, named as al Qaeda’s number two in Yemen, was charged with forming an armed gang, financing al Qaeda militants and involvement in the deaths of 18 Yemeni soldiers.
