The government ordered security forces on Tuesday to shoot anyone who tried to interfere with elections on Wednesday for mayors and local officials. The balloting will be the first in seven years, but nearly all the major political parties are boycotting it, calling the vote a sham intended to legitimize King Gyanendra’s rule. Maoist insurgents have threatened to kill anyone who votes.
