A Nepali protester was killed on Wednesday when troops opened fire to break up a demonstration against controversial local polls called by King Gyanendra who seized power a year ago, the army said. The incident happened in Dang, gateway to the Maoist rebel heartland in western Nepal, when 150 protesters tried to stop voting for municipal bodies. At many places, there was thin attendance at polling booths as Nepalis trickled into schools, temples and courtyards to cast their ballot for a vote seen by many as the first real test of King Gyanendra’s rule since he seized power.
