Days before the Dutch Parliament holds a crucial vote over sending troops to the south of Afghanistan, the NATO secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, has made an impassioned appeal to his countrymen to support one of the most dangerous missions undertaken by the U.S.-led military alliance. “This is an alliance based on solidarity where nations cannot pick and choose,” de Hoop Scheffer said during an interview in his Brussels office.
